Pendo at Pendo —a Medium publication highlighting how our product team here at Pendo uses Pendo i.e. dogfooding to build products customers love.
Fun fact: it is believed that the origin of dogfooding comes from the president of Kal Kan Pet Food, who was said to eat a can of his dog food at shareholders’ meetings. Amazing.
Made popular by Google, dogfooding is when a company uses (not always eats) the products that it makes.
It is also seen as a method or strategy for pre-release testing among internal teams (employees) to ensure a successful launch.
At Pendo, we do both.
To keep it real, we’ve been inconsistent as a team at dogfooding, but we all think it’s important. So we’ve decided to start measuring it. We now report out each week (using 15Five) how we individually used Pendo to help gain new insights, make decisions, progress the product, etc.
We also get frequent requests from our customers to share with them how we use the product.
Coming out of a recent staff meeting, we decided to start this publication. We thought it would be beneficial for several reasons:
- Our community could potentially benefit from seeing how our team uses the product
- It would help us be more intentional about documenting our best practices in a way that was consumable
- We could have a place where our customers could publish how they are using Pendo to inspire others
